The Dog and Cat Management (Cat Management) Amendment Bill 2024 - Far from Purrfect
The long-awaited draft Bill that seeks to broaden councils’ powers to control and deal with cats was released for public consultation earlier this month.
From the outset we note that the Bill is a missed opportunity to establish consistency across the State in relation to the issue of cat containment. The effect of this is that any requirements for cats to be contained on a property will remain a matter for individual council by-laws. The Bill does, however, address concerns previously raised by Local Government in relation to powers of authorised officers to seize, detain and dispose of cats, whether identified or not.
